The LEED-Platinum design of the building focuses on sustainability, and features new materials with recycled content and re-use of existing materials.
The new Recycling Center offers improved collection and processing areas, as well as a new centralized office. The El Cerrito Recycling Center includes more uses than a typical recycling center, offering a community-run book exchange, public information and education about sustainability and environmental activities, and provides a shared meeting space for local schools, clubs and community groups.
The Recycling Center included four bioswales to filter the groundwater prior to entering the storm drain system. It also included an 11,000 gallon cistern that collects rainwater from the operations building and uses it to irrigate the landscape areas and for flushing the Center’s restroom toilets.
