SMC Project Brings Home Three DBIA Awards

We are excited to share some incredible news. Swinerton Management & Consulting’s (SMC) City of Millbrae Recreation Center Project has been honored with three major awards at Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA)’s National Conference in Dallas, TX! This recognition is a huge milestone for our team and reinforces the amazing work we have been doing with our public sector clients.

The project achieved the city’s goal of providing a flexible facility that would serve as a hub for the community, while also introducing several unique innovations that make the new recreation center more sustainable and energy efficient. And it was celebrated across three distinct categories, each highlighting a key aspect of its impact and innovation.

Award Highlights

  • National Award of Merit, Civic/Assembly: Presented to projects that are judged against the Design-Build Done Right criteria and demonstrate effective schedule and cost performance, as well as exemplifying the principles of effective processes, interdisciplinary teamwork, problem-solving and excellence in design. These projects and teams serve as success stories for our industry.

  • National Award of Excellence, Civic/Assembly: All Merit winners in each category are considered for that category’s top honor. The National Award of Excellence winners will have excelled in two or more of the following areas: 1) interdisciplinary teamwork; 2) design-build best practices and process; and/or 3) excellence in design. The jury awards this top honor in each category at its discretion.

  • Best in Teaming Award: The Best in Teaming Award celebrates successful teaming relationships that are the cornerstone of design-build delivery, including the process for selecting team members, points of engagement, and methods and approaches used to enhance collaboration.

A Milestone for Innovation & Collaboration

Winning these three awards is a reflection of the dedication and passion of everyone involved in the project. Each contribution played a critical role in the project’s success.

A special congratulations to the team members for their efforts: Project Executives John Baker and Peter Vorametsanti, Senior Project Manager Linda Rizzoli, and Senior Construction Inspector Jonathan Haworth.
